What is Cellulite?

Hello Fit Skin Gang! The feature of this month is cellulite and our stunning Shrink to Fit product. We’re here to chat all about the causes, what you can do to minimize the appearance as well as dig deeper into what makes Shrink to Fit so amazing.

What is Cellulite?

Cellulite results from an excess storage of fat in the deeper skin layers beneath the connective tissue. As a result the skin gets uneven, loses elasticity and dimples occur. Inactive lifestyle, poor diet and lack of exercise intensifies the stagnancy of fat cells and makes the problem worse. It is well known that anti-cellulite massages combined with (yes, exercise) and topical treatments of the affected body areas - especially on thighs, buttocks, and stomach - help to reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Now, I don’t usually start off with a disclaimer, but as we are going to look at the causes of cellulite and who is affected by it I feel its important.

I would ask any man in your near vicinity to kindly walk away from you now………..all good?  Ok so the reason is not some secret formula, it’s so you don’t smack them after what I’m about to tell you.

Only about 10% of men are affected by cellulite and about 90% of women are!?!?………I KNOW!!!! SO unfair!  See why I had you ask them to leave?

Ok so this all comes down to the structure of our fat cells and connective tissue over theirs.  Men’s fat cells are held together in a diamond shape structure of connective tissue (and we thought diamonds were supposed to be a girls best friend) what this means is as they grow they stay pretty nicely stacked on top of each other.  Ours on the other hand are more oval in shape, so as they grow, yep you guessed it, doesn’t stack up so nicely. Margarita Lolis, M.D, a board-certified cosmetic and medical dermatologist based in New Jersey explains "Men's connective tissue is more interwoven than women's, Imagine men's connective tissue like mesh on a screen door—it's harder for fat to get through—while women's connective tissue isn't as tightly formed, leaving more spaces for the fat to bulge through."

Hormones are also to blame here as fat cells respond differently to female and male hormones. Specifically to oestrogen a hormone women are full of (joy!) and as we age and oestrogen rises, it only makes things worse.

Cellulite is also in your genes, nope not the ones you wear but the ones you got from your Momma (gee thanks). The fact is if your mom or grandma had cellulite, you can almost guarantee you will too.

Cellulite also doesn’t care if you are fit or not – true, exercise does help to minimize it or even prevent it. This again comes down to DNA.

See you next week for more info on what cellulite is and how to minimize it.
