What you may have noticed going to your doctors visits is no one really talks about your skin and all the crazy things that are happening to it….acne…!?!? 

Yep, one thing about all those hormones is it can leave you feeling a bit like a teenager. But the downside is that you can’t always treat your skin the same way you did before you were pregnant.  This week were going to give you the low down on the do’s and don’ts of what to do for your skin during pregnancy.  While it’s not necessary to do a complete overhaul on all the products in your bathroom, this is definitely a time to rather cherry pick and be more mindful of the ingredients and products you are using. 

As a rule less is more while you’re expecting, as products you were able to use before may now cause a reaction or irritation.  Some active ingredients in pregnancy are really advised to skip until you are back to your post preggy self.

What to do or not do to

Rashes and Itchy Skin: It is common for temporary rashes and itchiness to come and go during pregnancy, without any obvious cause. Increased hormone levels make you more sensitive to contact with substances that would not normally affect you.


Gentle exfoliation and making sure to moisturize all over your body, top to toe.

Look for shower products that don’t contain Sulfates as theses can be more drying on your delicate skin.

To: Avoid any harsh soaps or washing detergents as these can make rashes or itchy skin worse.

Don't: Ignore any new or worsening symptoms: If you begin to experience severe itching late in your pregnancy, possibly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fatigue and possibly jaundice, you should contact your doctor. This could be a sign of cholestasis, which is related to the function of the liver

Itchy Belly


Spend extra time 2-3 times a day giving your growing bump some extra TLC. Gently massage in products rich in Omega’s that help to feed the skin and ease the tension.

Don’t scratch!! This can lead to worse problems like more stretch marks as the skin is thinner than normal.

Acne – yep, those pesky hormones are to blame for your skin looking more like a teenager than a mother to be.

Go get a facial! There is no better time to go visit your spa or salon than when you’re pregnant

Don't: Over cleanse or over exfoliate, this can irritate the skin further


Do: Reach for Vitamin A (Retinols)and Benzoyl Peroxide as well as avoid AHA’s and BHA’s.  While we love these ingredients for their amazing resurfacing abilities, there is no concrete evidence on their affect during pregnancy, so rather shelf them until you’re back to your post natal self.

Dark patches (cholasma) Also known as the "mask of pregnancy", has the appearance of brown patches of pigmentation on the forehead, cheeks, and neck. On darker-skinned women, they appear as lighter patches.

Wear a good SPF of at least a 15. 

Wear a hat when outside.

The sun can worsen any pigmentation, protection here is key

Don't: Use any products containing hydroquinone

Stretch Marks usually appear on the abdomen, breasts and thighs. They affect between 75 and 90 per cent of pregnant women and may appear as you put on more weight during pregnancy, causing the skin to stretch. 


Up your vitamins internally and externally specifically foods and products rich in Vitamins C and E as well as Essential fatty acids (omegas)

Exercise – this help increase circulation which aids in the skins stretch

Hydrate your skin early and often, it is never too early to start with moisturizing your skin in preparation of pregnancy.

Varicose and spider veins: This happens because your body is compensating for the extra blood flow that is going to your baby. Varicose veins can be uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Spider Veins  more commonly appear on the cheeks.


Wearing compression stockings to stimulate blood flow up your legs and towards the heart. Make sure you buy stockings that specifically say “compression” or “pregnancy-safe.”

Getting daily exercise.

Keeping your legs elevated.

Put away your heels and get some cute flats.

Don't: Gain too much weight

Don't:Eat food very high in salt or sodium

Don't: Stand or sit for long periods of time.

Don't: Cross your legs

Aching muscles and a sore back

Get a pregnancy massage!! Massage is safe throughout your pregnancy so go as often as you need!

Don't: Take a long hot bath or Jacuzzi. Long soaks can elevate your body temp and have a negative affect on your growing baby
