Hair during pregnancy is a pretty hot topic. But what happens to your tresses in pregnancy can have you more than just scratching your head. Hormones again are at work here….we are starting to have a love/hate relationship with them.  We’ve answered some common questions to put you at ease and back into your stylist chair once again.

Can I have my hair coloured while I am pregnant? The short and easy answer here is yes. But there are some things to consider:

  • You’ll want to sit in a well-ventilated area, away from any other chemical treatments that are being done. This is not the time to be shy, speak up and tell your hair colourist that you’re pregnant and to place you somewhere near a door or window that you can open.
  • opt for highlights, which don’t touch the skin, or ask your colourist for an ammonia-free base if you’re going to do a single process colour.
  • If the texture of your hair has changed, rather play it safe and avoid any chemical treatments (chemically straightening or curling) as there is not enough evidence to support what affect it has on a growing baby. Rather reach for products that help to enhance what is happening while you are expecting

Can I use my regular shampoo during pregnancy? When searching for the perfect pregnancy-safe shampoos and conditioners, there are some rules of thumb to keep in mind. The jury is out on whether coal tar, which is found in many anti- dandruff hair products, is safe or not during pregnancy, so it’s best to stay away.  Also SLS’s are ingredients to try and avoid, not only do they dull your colour faster they can dry out your scalp.  Opt for colour safe shampoos and conditioners or you can look for an all-natural alternative at your salon or health store.

Am I imagining things or is my hair getting thicker?  Now this is one part that you can thank those hormones we’ve been so upset with.  No, you’re not imagining anything. You’re not actually growing more hair, you’re just not losing it as quickly as you typically would. You might have noticed there are less strands left behind in the shower or when you brush your hair. During pregnancy those higher levels of oestrogen in your body prompt your hair to remain in the growth phase for longer.

Sadly, don’t get too used to it. Once you deliver, your hair will go back to its pre-baby glory. Something to remember for after you give birth – some women get quite the fright when washing or brushing and seeing clumps of hair coming out.  Not to worry, you’re not going bald your hair is just returning to its normal growth cycle.

If you want to play it as safe as possible, why not wait until after your delivery day and plan a post-pregnancy pampering at the salon. Go all out and get your hair straightened or relaxed and your baby can stay safe at home away from the chemicals.
